What joining CloudWorks looks like, from our two newest hires!

The first day of a new job comes with a rush of excitement, mixed with the feeling of “I can’t believe this is happening”! It is rarely the actual work that’s daunting, but more the small questions. Where do I sit? How does the coffee machine work? Who do I ask about this login? It’s easy to feel a bit lost when you have not found your go-to person yet.

Megan, who recently joined the marketing team, and Ana, who started on the design team, have given us first-hand insights into the CloudWorks onboarding process. Continue reading to learn more about their experience.

What was your very first thought or feeling on your first day?

Ana: This was my first office job, so I did not know what to expect, but once I walked in, I immediately felt very relaxed and comfortable. The place and the people instantly gave off a warm, welcoming vibe. Everyone I met really made me feel part of the team from the first moment.

Who made a big impression on you during onboarding, and why?

Megan: The person who made the biggest impression on me was my buddy. During onboarding, I was assigned an experienced co-worker whose aim was to guide me through the process and serve as a friendly face. It was great to have her around to ask all my silly questions, like how the coffee machine works and what exactly an IQ was”.

Ana: For me, the person who made the most memorable impression was Wilma, the office manager. From the first moment I met her, she was so energetic and welcoming that I immediately felt like part of the CloudWorks team.

What was your biggest challenge when starting at CloudWorks?

Megan:  The biggest challenge was entering into a new industry without prior knowledge of access control. I was nervous about learning all the technical aspects of the products and understanding the ins and outs in detail.

Ana: I found understanding the technical aspects of the role the most challenging, such as using Figma, the inner workings of the role, what is expected of me, and the types of tasks I need to do.

Was there a moment when things “clicked” for you?

Megan: There was this moment after an onboarding session on one of our biggest products, Salto KS, where we had the chance to understand how everything worked, see a demonstration, and ask any questions we had. This helped put all the little pieces of information I had gathered together in a more cohesive way. I felt myself beginning to understand, which is a great feeling!

When did you stop feeling like a guest?

Megan: The point where I stopped feeling like a guest was actually after my first week. After a lot of onboarding, we all gathered for a company social outside with pizza and cocktails. It felt like I was getting to know everyone on a more personal level and began being able to put faces to names. We were able to chat freely about weekend plans and upcoming trips. It was a perfect way to end the first week

Ana: I think in some way, I never felt like a guest. There was a lot of communication before my start date, which answered a lot of the questions most people have on their first day. As well, when I entered, there was an immediate warm welcome. I think having that first impression eases any worry.

What’s something you wish you had known on day one?

Megan: The learning process takes time, and there is no need to worry about the details and technical aspects; they will come with time. No one expects me to be an expert in access control overnight.

What are you most looking forward to as a CloudWorks employee?

Megan: Something I am most looking forward to is the company culture. Although it is a fairly large company, it still maintains a dynamic feel. It’s exciting to be part of a team that is passionate about what they've created and eager to innovate.

Ana: I am most looking forward to working in this environment. From day 1, I felt like part of a team, and I am excited to contribute to that!

We know joining CloudWorks can feel like a steep learning curve in a technical environment, which is why we focus on creating a welcoming space where every new brick feels like a success.
